Merrillville Schools awards Planetarium upgrade bid

On Tuesday, October 17th, the Merrillville Community School Corporation awarded a contract to Sky-Skan, INC. to install a new digital video system and LED cove lighting.DigitalSky

The new video system will operate with six DLP projectors, working in unison to cover the entire surface of the dome. The new system will work in conjunction with the existing projectors.

The new lighting system will be automated, leaving only one major system for the Planetarium still under manual control. The system will be LED based, and allow over 65,000 colors to be blended together in real time on the dome. Each section will be 1' long, and can be individually controlled to create a more realistic sunrise and sunset.

The total contract value for this project is over $135,000. Sky-Skan has already begun installation of the systems, and hopes to have it ready by the middle of next week.

Questions on the new system should be directed to Gregg Williams, Planetarium Director.
