Merrillville Community Planetarium
Bringing the Universe to the Merrillville Schools and Northwest Indiana


The Merrillville Community Planetarium is part of the Merrillville Community School Corporation, a K-12 public school system in Northwest Indiana. The Planetarium is located in Clifford Pierce Middle School. We provide programming for Merrillville classes, outside groups, and the public.

  • 1749 - French astronomer Pierre Laplace was born. Studied the the stability of the solar system using mathematics.
  • 1837 - English astronomer Richard Proctor was born. Suggested that moon craters were caused by meteor impacts.
  • 1840 - First photograph of Moon.
  • 1912 - Wernher von Braun is born in Germany. After World War II, von Braun developed rockets for America's space program.
  • 1965 - Gemini 3 (USA) launched. Virgil 'Gus' Grissom and John Young were aboard the first flight of the Gemini program.
  • 1996 - Shannon Lucid, an American astronaut, becomes first woman to live aboard Mir. She spends 118 days on Mir.
  • 2001 - Russian Space Station Mir ends 15 years in orbit by burning up in Earth's atmosphere.
