The Merrillville Community Planetarium is part of the Merrillville Community School Corporation, a K-12 public school system in Northwest Indiana. The Planetarium is located in Clifford Pierce Middle School. We provide programming for Merrillville classes, outside groups, and the public.



Due to the coronavirus and COVID-19, all activities in the Merrillville Schools — including all planetarium shows — have been cancelled through June 30, 2020. For more information on closures in the Merrillville Schools, please visit www.mvsc.k12.in.us/

May 30, 2020
  • 1966 - Surveyor 1 (USA) launched. 1st US probe to soft land on the Moon. Returned 11,150 surface photos.
  • 1971 - Mariner 9 (USA) launched. 2nd pair of "sister" mars probes. Mariner 8 failed and Mariner 9 returned data and pictures.
  • 1974 - ATS 6 (USA) launched. Applied Technology Satellite. Provided communication with smaller ground stations.
