The Merrillville Community Planetarium is part of the Merrillville Community School Corporation, a K-12 public school system in Northwest Indiana. The Planetarium is located in Clifford Pierce Middle School. We provide programming for Merrillville classes, outside groups, and the public.

  • 1598 - Italian astronomer Giovanni Riccioli was born. First to observe a double star (1650) Mizar and alcor in Ursa Major.
  • 1964 - Jerrie Mock (USA) becomes the first woman to complete a solo airplane flight around the world.
  • 1967 - Surveyor 3 (USA) launched. Took 6315 pictures and returned them to earth. Surface sampler dug into lunar soil.
  • 1970 - Apollo 13 returned safely after aborting mission to the moon.
  • 1998 - STS-90 (Columbia). Spacelab mission. Duration: 15d 21h. Landing at Kennedy.
